Theresa May’s Representation of Reality in her Brexit Speeches
2020
This study analyses Theresa May’s three seminal Brexit speeches. These describe the kind of desirable post-Brexit EU-UK relationship that she envisioned, and together constitute a corpus of 18,532 words. The speeches can be considered as landmarks on a timeline that was initially meant to lead to the delivery of Brexit. It is hypothesized that there may be meaningful differences between the speeches, and that these affect the representation of reality. These in turn would have a bearing on May’s discursive self-representation as either an individualized or a collectivized social actor. To account for such representational values, the study draws on Halliday’s Transitivity System (1994), sta…
Asimismo…
Emotional politics on Facebook. An exploratory study of Podemos’ discourse during the European election campaign 2014
2015
The results of the European elections 2014 in Spain were characterized by the outstanding rise of a new party, Podemos, which obtained five seats in the European Parliament, despite being founded few months before the elections. The present study analyzes both the content and the presence of emotions in Podemos’ discourse on Facebook during the European electoral campaign. In particular, the affective content of both the party’s discourse and the comments of its followers will be analyzed through a pragmatic linguistic approach applied to a corpus of 163 posts and 215 followers’ comments. Results show an insistence on positive emotions in the party’s discourse and a prevalence of negative e…
Integrating a Nexus: the history of political discourse and language policy research
2019
Historians of political discourse and language policy researchers should join forces to develop methods of textual analysis that help to integrate political and intellectual history. They could do so by focusing their analysis on interconnections between material realities, human physical action, practices and structures, as well as institutions and ideologies as discursive constructs. Such a version of soft constructivism underscoring the discursive nature of much of politics encourages historians to analyse past political discourses more systematically. Concepts such as nexus, historical body, mobility and discursive transfers borrowed from language research deepen our analytical understa…
A Civilization of Death: Argumentative and Rhetorical Strategies in the Catholic Church's Position on Biotechnology
2017
Although political deliberation rarely proceeds fairly and effectively (Habermas 1984, 1989), the author of this paper assumes the fundamentally deliberative nature of the democratic public sphere, in which different religious institutions may take a stance and argue either for or against certain legal solutions. The study examines argumentation behind the Catholic Church’s negative stance on biotechnologies such as, for example, in vitro fertilization (IVF). Drawing on the theoretical and descriptive work on normative assumptions, knowledge bases and argumentative patterns involved in practical reasoning (Perelman, Olbrechts- Tyteca 1969; Walton 1990; Fairclough, Fairclough 2010, 2012), as…
Melu sintakses kods politiskajā diskursā
2019
Negotiating digital surveillance legislation in post-Snowden times : An argumentation analysis of Finnish political discourse
2019
Abstract In the digital era, when security agencies world-wide have been challenging basic democratic principles with massive data gathering, Finland has had a different approach: it has conducted no large-scale surveillance of citizens’ online activities. Now, however, the country is planning such a vast expansion of state surveillance that the constitution itself must be altered. The present article examines one key point in this legislative process to see how the new surveillance measures are argued for and criticized, and how the differing points of view are negotiated to ultimately enable political action. Drawing particularly on Fairclough and Fairclough’s (2012) approach to argumenta…
2019
In this paper I discuss the current state of the so called populist political discourse in Italy. In particular my purpose is to shed light on some features of this kind of discourse in order to show the relation between language and policy in the discourse of populism. In this perspective I will follow the eight key points that, according to Diamanti & Lazar (2018), identify the actual populist movements, in order to verify if – and, in that case, which – linguistic traits characterize their discourse. The analysis will be focused on the semantic and argumentative aspects of the discourse of some of the most important political actors in contemporary Italy.
2016
In this paper I discuss some features of Italian political discourse after the ending of the so called ‘berlusconismo’ (that is, the specific communicative style of Silvio Berlusconi, the leader of Italian right wing for almost two decades). In particular, I display the figure of Matteo Renzi, the current Italian Prime Minister and Secretary of PD, the most important Italian political party. In my work, I try to pinpoint the peculiarity of Renzi’s discourse strategies. In this vein, I suggest to use the notion of ‘disphasic discourse’, in order to underline the strong decrease of styles, genres and textual types variability characterizing his ways of communicating. I focus the attention on …
